Gay Wilmington: Take a walk on the riverside

Wilmington's main tourist appeal is its large historic district situated on the Cape Fear River. Here you'll find a mile-long pedestrian stretch called the Riverwalk lined with cute shops, great seafood restaurants and hotels. Not far from the walk are the city's three main gay bars, so a lazy day by the river can fast turn into an energized night out. You'll get the feeling that this small town embraces its artsy side. Scattered about downtown are many historic sites, museums and theaters. In November Wilmington welcomes film buffs from near and far for the renowned Cucalorus Film Festival. This appreciation of the arts also translates into an acceptance for all sorts of people, making Wilmington a great spot for a romantic getaway. Walk by the river hand in hand without fear of unwanted attention, and enjoy all that this funky town has to offer.
